Why did D4vd's private lawyers withdraw?
The public record confirms a change in representation, but not a complete explanation for it.
At Burke's August 31 arraignment, the court allowed private attorneys Blair Berk, Marilyn Bednarski and Regina Peter to withdraw. Reuters reported that Berk said Burke requested new representation. The Los Angeles County Public Defender's Office then took over after saying it had completed a financial evaluation and found him eligible for appointed counsel.
New public defender Walid Kandeel requested more time before the arraignment continued. The judge denied that request, and Burke pleaded not guilty. He remains held without bail.
What is not established is equally important. The available reporting does not show that the private lawyers withdrew because they believed Burke was guilty, because they thought the evidence was overwhelming, because they were forced out, or because a specific unpaid bill ended the relationship. It also does not publicly disclose the full reason Burke requested different representation.
The counsel change affects who is defending Burke. It is not a ruling on the charges and does not change the fact that guilt has not been decided.
